HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWIII - ForestryCITY OF IOWA CITY – Job Description Job Class #08-05 FLSA Non-Exempt Civil Service Identification Position Title: Maintenance Worker III - Forestry Department: Parks & Recreation Division: Parks & Forestry Supervisor: Superintendent of Parks & Forestry Job Summary Under general direction, plants and maintains trees and landscape plantings located in City's right-of-ways, parks and other public areas. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Plants, trims, removes and maintains trees and flower beds located in City right-of-ways, parks and other public areas. Assists in the emergency removal and clean-up of storm damaged trees. Transplants trees and shrubs from City nursery to public areas. Locates underground utilities. Plants bare root trees in City's nursery and maintains trees by mechanical, chemical and other means. Removes snow located in City right-of-ways, parks and other public areas. Assists in maintaining computerized service requests, street tree inventory, private trim notices, commercial contractor services, chemical applications and safety concerns. Participates in initial inspection of new requests and initiates trim notices for non-City trees. Maintains appropriate records of daily work logs for monthly reports, public requests for tree planting and removal, stump removal and inventories of previously planted trees. Directs the work activities of hourly workers and other permanent employees as assigned. Performs inspection of and minor repair on equipment including chain saws, wood chipper, tree spade, bucket truck, roto tiller and various hand tools. Assists in training new employees, inspecting contracts, monitoring expenses and purchasing for daily operations. Conducts duties in a manner providing for the safety of City employees and the general public and maintains records of incidents concerning bodily injury or property damage. Provides explanation of work practices to the general public. Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud. Minimum Education, Experience and Certification High school degree or equivalent and two years of experience in forestry or in a related field required. Iowa Department of Agriculture Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification required. Forklift and backhoe certification must be obtained within probationary period. Valid Class B commercial driver’s license with airbrakes endorsement and satisfactory driving record required. Valid Class A commercial driver’s license with airbrakes endorsement required within 6 months of hire. This position is subject to federal drug testing requirements including screening through the FMCSA Clearinghouse. A pre-employment drug screen is required. Must be 18 years of age per Iowa Code 92.8. Must pass background check. Preferred Education, Experience and Certification Associate degree or equivalent in forestry or in a related field from a DOE recognized accreditation body preferred. Three to four years in forestry or in a related field preferred. Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) training preferred. ISA Certified Arborist or Certified Municipal Arborist preferred. Job Class #08-05 Parks & Forestry Page 3 Updated 4/13/21 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of arboricultural techniques including heavy rigging for removal of trees and dead or hazardous limbs. Knowledge of tree maintenance and tree identification. Knowledge of tree diseases. Skills in operating and maintaining variety of tools and equipment used in forestry and landscaping. Skills in operating a computer. Ability to read technical materials and maps to prepare written log sheets and records. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
