HomeMy WebLinkAboutRecreation SuperintendentCITY OF IOWA CITY - Job Description Job Class #30-10 FLSA Exempt Non Civil Service Identification Position Title: Recreation Superintendent Department: Parks & Recreation Division: Recreation Supervisor: Parks & Recreation Director Job Summary Organizes, directs, provides vision and supervises the City-sponsored special events, recreation facilities and recreation programming. Coordinates the provision of leisure skills and recreational services for the general public. Ensures that the diverse population of Iowa city feels welcome and is well-served through recreation staff and services that reflect and enhance community identity. Job Scope Directly supervises six full-time employees and 20-25 part-time, hourly employees. Indirectly responsible for approximately four hundred to six hundred hourly employees. Prepares and administers annual budget for the division. Actively works with community groups and partners to extend resources and reach of City services. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Performs budgetary responsibilities including preparing, documenting, amending and monitoring of division budget; oversees contract administration; writes grant applications; recommends program fees and charges. Responsible for cash management and deposits from Recreation facilities and programs. Represents division to outside agencies and general public; monitors department branding and communications; monitors activities and relationships of outside organizations and other City departments with division; coordinates all use of recreation facilities by City programs and community groups. Supervises production and dissemination of division program brochures, social media and other branding/marketing channels. Interviews and selects staff; trains and supervises selected employees; conducts performance appraisals; approves division personnel actions; takes disciplinary action as needed; recommends wage scales. Responsible for all on-boarding paperwork and background checks. Provides input regarding facility maintenance needs and capital projects. Job Class #30-10 Recreation Page 2 Updated 7/17/2018 Develops, maintains and coordinates policies for operation of division. Is the public face and leader of the Recreation division. Listens and responds to complaints, suggestions and ideas from the general public regarding division activities. Hires, trains and directly supervises hourly customer service staff for Recreation Centers and at City Park pool. Attends meetings of and provides information to Park & Recreation Commission. Functions as liaison to youth sports organizations on monthly basis. May perform as acting Parks & Recreation Director in his/her absence. Available during evenings and weekends to respond to Recreation program and facility needs. Encourages outreach and support to diverse Iowa City populations through selection of staff, event and program creation and marketing. Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. Performs other related duties as assigned. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Minimum Education, Experience and Certification Bachelor's degree in recreation administration or related field from an educational institution accredited by a DOE recognized accreditation body required. A minimum of five years of responsible supervisory experience in community recreation required. Must become Certified Parks and Recreation Professional within one year of hire. Creativity to offer unique events and programs. Knowledge of community resources and the administration of principles, techniques, and methods of providing recreational opportunities. Skills in effective oral and written communication. Skills in organization of recreational programs and establishing and maintaining positive public relations. Ability to make analytical decisions based on department policy statements. Ability to read and understand technical materials, reports and journals. Ability to use computer.
