HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWI - Water PlantCITY OF IOWA CITY - Job Description Job Class #03-19 FLSA Non-Exempt Civil Service Identification Position Title: Maintenance Worker I – Water Plant Department: Public Works Division: Water Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent – Water / Water Superintendent Job Summary Under immediate direction, performs work of routine difficulty in the cleaning and maintenance of grounds and buildings at the water treatment plant and pumping stations. Performs meter reading and maintenance of the meter reading system. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Cleans floors and carpets at the water treatment plant buildings; washes windows and cleans bathrooms and break rooms; removes trash from buildings. Paints buildings and equipment; removes trash and litter from water plant grounds. Mows grass around water treatment plant and pumping stations; performs minor maintenance to facility equipment. Plants trees and shrubs and maintains landscaping; works with hourly employees and relays landscaping and maintenance tasks. Operates snow removal equipment in winter months at water plant, trails and peninsula. Reads and records residential, commercial and industrial water meter readings; operates electronic data entry equipment related to water meter reading and assists with routine meter reading problem solving. Collects water samples and conducts lab tests to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations; determines levels of alkalinity, hardness, turbidity, pH, TDS, temperature and LSI. Writes, reviews and performs water service work orders using computerized and filed information. Maintains job records. Sets up rooms for meetings. Helps customers and answers questions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to talk and hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Minimum Education, Experience and Certification High school degree or equivalent required. Three months of experience in building and grounds maintenance required. Must obtain Iowa Public Official Pesticide Applicator License for Right-Of-Way Pesticide Use (Category 6) within one year of appointment. Valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record required. Must be 18 years of age per Iowa Code 92.8. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience and Certification Three years of experience in building and grounds maintenance preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of general landscaping and ground maintenance procedures. Skills in the operation of various trucks and equipment including mowers, pressure washer, painting equipment, power vacuum, tractors, snow blowers and hand tools. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to make simple mathematical calculations and take measurements. Ability to read and understand work orders and maintain written job records.
