Job Summary
Under general direction, performs general service, diagnosis, maintenance and repairs of heavy duty
transit coaches and other equipment in the City transit fleet.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
Performs welding, fabrication and component rebuilding and reconditioning services in hydraulic
pumps and other units on a wide range of equipment, as assigned.
Inspects City transit fleet and equipment for safety defects and road worthiness; removes vehicles
from service due to defects; inspects mechanical functions including the suspension, steering, brakes,
lights, tires, hoses and exhaust systems.
Diagnoses mechanical problems, electrical components, cooling components and chair lifts, and
determines the extent of necessary repairs.
Repairs, adjusts and rebuilds engines, transmissions, differentials and clutches.
Raises vehicles using hydraulic jack or hoists to remove, rebuild or replace units such as an engine,
transmission or differential.
Performs preventive maintenance on all buses and equipment; tunes up engines; replaces, fits and
adjusts components; replaces parts including fuel injectors, fuel pumps, strainers, fuel lines, fuel tanks
and bearings.
Wires, diagnoses and reconditions electrical systems and computerized engine and transmission
controls.
Repairs and replaces components such as generators, distributors, relays, lights, switches, brakes,
suspension and steering.
Relines brakes, replaces master cylinders, boosters, air brake components and turns drums and
rotors.
Replaces, fits and adjusts radiators, water pumps and hoses.
Answers service calls and performs repair work in the field in a timely manner.
Assists in sign shop, fabrication and installation.

Assists in general building maintenance, welds and repairs leaks.
Assists in training of new Mass Transit Operators.
Loads and unloads freight.
Cleans work area and shop; repairs and maintains equipment used in repair of vehicles.
Prepares new vehicles for service and removes older ones from fleet.
Performs preventive maintenance to the transit bus fleet
Reports time and material costs on work orders on computerized fleet maintenance system;
completes time sheets, repair order forms and other related work on computerized fleet maintenance
system.
Furnishes personal hand tools for use in performing job duties.
Responds to emergencies such as removing wheelchair-bound passengers stranded on buses.
Contacts other transit facilities to share information and trade parts; contacts public when assisting
with stranded passengers or explaining service related issues; May have contact with vendors.
Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace
and community.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to
finger, handle or feel; and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and reach with
hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch,
crawl and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds with
assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color
vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical
parts, fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or
humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat,
risk of electrical shock and explosives.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Minimum Education, Experience and Certification
Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or
three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Degree in Automotive/Diesel Mechanics. Experience in auto/diesel mechanics, fleet maintenance or
related. Air brake inspection certification. Valid State of Iowa driver’s license with satisfactory driving
record. Valid State of Iowa Class B commercial driver's license with air brake and passenger
endorsement required within 90 days of hire. Must meet federal drug testing requirements. A pre-
employment drug screen is required. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background
check.
Preferred Education, Experience and Certification
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or four years of related experience
and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in welding, fabrication and
component rebuilding and reconditioning.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of safety defects. Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, electrical systems,
computerized engine control and fuel systems. Knowledge of EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)
and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations. Skills in the use of tools and
repair equipment including engine, electrical and digital diagnostic equipment and precision measuring
equipment. Ability to diagnose engine malfunctions and perform necessary repairs. Ability to read and
interpret service manuals, diagrams and technical information. Ability to perform basic mathematical
calculations and compute torque values, metric conversions and measurement of equipment
tolerances. Ability to prepare written and computerized repair orders.
