PROCLAMATION
Whereas, the bicycle is an economical, environmentally sound, and effective means of
transportation, recreation, and fitness; and
Whereas, the bicycle is considered a legitimate vehicle in all 50 states and is entitled
to legal and responsible use of all public roads in Iowa, except interstate highways; and
Whereas, increased use of the bicycle will benefit all citizens by improving air quality,
reducing traffic congestion and noise, decreasing use of and dependence upon finite
energy resources and will foster healthy lifestyles; and
Whereas, the City of Iowa City has an ongoing commitment to encourage bicycling as
a viable mode of transportation and recreation; and
Whereas, the month of May has been declared Johnson County Bike to Work Month,
and the City of Iowa City supports bicycling to work; and
Whereas, the League of American Bicyclists has established the month of May as
National Bicycle Month.
Now, therefore, I, James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim
the month of May 2017 to be
Bike to Work Month
in Iowa City, IA, and encourage all citizens to ride their bicycles to work, to the store,
to the park, to school, and with friends and family to promote the many benefits
achieved from bicycling.

Bike Law's Jim Freeman discusses bicycle safety,
laws affecting cyclists, dangerous situations,
interactions with law enforcement, your legal
rights, and legislation affecting bicyclists. He can
also speak about bicycle legislation in the 2017
session.

bike along a common commuter route between
the Coralville and Iowa City Public Libraries. Join
the ride or greet them at the finish.
Ladies Bike Night
Geoff's Bike & Ski, 816 S. Gilbert St., IC 15:45-7 pm
Iowa City Women's Cycling hosts a ladies only
group ride followed by drinks and snacks at
Bread Garden. Group A for first -timers will ride
10-15 mph for 1-1.5 hours. Group B, for more
experienced cyclists, will ride 15-20 mph for 1-1.5
hours. Rain Date is Monday, May 22.

PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, in 1934 the Hotel Jefferson commissioned Mildred Pelzer, a local artist,
to paint 8 large murals for its lobby, and
WHEREAS, in consultation with a group of prominent Iowa Citians, transportation
was chosen as a theme for the murals; and
WHEREAS, all 8 murals depicted historic Iowa City scenes from 1838 through 1902;
and
WHEREAS, of the 5 known surviving murals, 2 — Railroad Comes to Iowa City
(1856) and Stage Ready (1855) — have been at Longfellow Elementary School since the
1970's; and
WHEREAS, the Iowa City Community School District has agreed to loan those
murals to the City of Iowa City where Railroad Arrives will be displayed at the Iowa City
Public Library and Stage Ready will be displayed at the Senior Center during the 15 -
month remodeling of Longfellow.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby
proclaim May 2017 through August 2018 to be
MILDRED PELZER MURAL
APPRECIATION YEAR
and encourage all citizens to avail themselves of this opportunity to view these murals
and reflect on the artistry of Mildred Pelzer and the historic period of our city which she
captured 83 years ago.
