Purpose
The purpose of the Iowa City Public Library's Bookmobile is to offer collections and services beyond the
Downtown and extend Library services throughout the community. The Bookmobile will connect with
our community in new places; engage with new partners and patrons; and enrich lives through better
access to Library collections and services.
Library Bookmobile services also align with the focus of the City of Iowa City's Strategic Plan that intends
to foster a more inclusive, just and sustainable Iowa City:
1. Promote a strong and resilient local economy
2. Encourage a vibrant and walkable urban core
3. Foster healthy neighborhoods throughout the City
4. Maintain a solid financial foundation
5. Enhance community engagement and intergovernmental relations
6. Promote environmental sustainability,
7. Advance social justice and racial equity
The need for the Bookmobile was identified through Iowa City Public Library Strategic Planning to
answer the question, "What is the most affordable and effective way to serve our community outside of
the Downtown Library?"
Logistics
The Bookmobile will offer three annual schedule periods. The Summer Schedule (June -August) focuses
on serving children and visits high visibility locations. The Fall and Spring Schedules (August -December
and January -May) focus on serving locations throughout the community.
If a community member has a suggestion for a Bookmobile stop, they should contact the Library's
Bookmobile Assistant, Shawna Riggins, at Shawna-rieeins@icpl.ore or by calling 319-887-6084.
The Bookmobile will attend community events as scheduling and Library staffing allow.

How many bookmobiles are there in the United States? 661 (in 2014, IMLS source)
Where are Iowa's bookmobiles? Ames Public Library, Scott County Library System, Woodbury County
Library, Antelope Lending Library and ICPL
A bit of history: The first bookmobile service in the U.S. is widely acknowledged to have started in 1905
as a purpose-built horse-drawn wagon to reach rural homes in Washington County, Maryland. Other
types of bookmobiles include a two -wheeled cart in India in 1931, a biblioburro in rural Colombia, a
camel library service in Uganda, the M.S. Epos library ship in Norway, and elephant libraries in
Thailand. (Source: National Bookmobile Day 2017 — Bookmobiles at a Glance)
History
The Bookmobile vehicle was funded by a $150,000 gift from the Iowa City Public Library Friends
Foundation and $100,000 in CIP funds from the City of Iowa City.
Eight Library staff members are regularly assigned to work on the Bookmobile and it is staffed by 2 ICPL
staff members when in service. One new staff member was hired using City of Iowa City operational
budget funds and one staff member increased their time from 26 hours per week to full-time. Funding
for this increase was made possible from generous support from the Iowa City Public Library Friends
Foundation.
The Iowa City Public Library works collaboratively with the Antelope Lending Library, a private
bookmobile that serves the Iowa City area.
The vehicle was designed in consultation with Library Staff by Specialty Vehicle Services in Muskego, WI
The vehicle was constructed by Summit Body Works in Commerce City, CO
