PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, May 20th, 2017 is the seventh Kids to Parks Day organized an
launched by the National Park Trust; and
WHEREAS, Kids to Parks Day empowers kids and encourages families to get
outdoors and visit America's parks; and
WHEREAS, the City of Iowa City maintains 47 parks that offer space for active play,
reflection in nature, and community gathering; and
WHEREAS, Iowa City Parks and Recreation staff believe that all children should
have the opportunity to learn outdoor recreation skills such as how to swim, how to bike
safely and how to play in the outdoors; and
WHEREAS, it is important to introduce a new generation to our nation's parks
because of the decline in Park attendance over the last decades; and
WHEREAS, we should encourage children to lead a more active lifestyle to combat
the issues of childhood obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia;
and
WHEREAS, Kids to Parks Day is open to all children and adults across the country to
encourage a large and diverse group of participants; and
WHEREAS, Kids to Parks Day will broaden children's appreciation for nature and
the outdoors.
NOW THEREFORE, I, James A. Tbrogmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby
proclaim May 20, 2017 to be

and urge residents of Iowa City to make time on that day to take the children in their lives
to a neighborhood, state or national park.

WHEREAS, Horace Mann Elementary is located in the Northside neighborhood at
521 North Dodge Street and was one of three schools built in Iowa City during 1917;
and
WHEREAS, Horace Mann Elementary was named after an educational reformer
who dedicated himself to promoting public education, and who believed that,
"Education is the great equalizer of the conditions of men, the balance -wheel of the
social machinery"; and
WHEREAS, the mission of Horace Mann Elementary is to provide a nurturing
environment that supports life-long learning with a challenging and creative
curriculum and where learning is enhanced by partnerships within the community; and
WHEREAS, Horace Mann is one of 26 schools in the Iowa City Community
School District, which serves over 14,000 students in Iowa City, Coralville, North
Liberty, and other nearby communities; and
WHEREAS, the year 2017 commemorates the 100`s year of Horace Mann
Elementary as a vibrant school in the central district of Iowa City.

sponsored by the American Public Works Association and this year's theme is
"Public Works Connects Us"; and
WHEREAS, public works, as a cornerstone of civilization, plays a vital role in
connecting us all together; and
WHEREAS, public works provide, maintain, and improve the structures and services
that assure a higher quality of life for our community; and
WHEREAS, our streets, roads, bridges and public transportation keep us linked together,
and our clean water and sanitation services keep us healthy and allow our community to grow
and prosper; and
WHEREAS, the employees of the Iowa City Public Works Department work tirelessly
every day to strengthen the bond that keeps us all connected; and

Whereas, in 1962 President John Kennedy set aside this week to pay tribute to the law
enforcement officers of this nation, and to memorialize those who have fallen in the line
of duty; and
Whereas, the police officers and their support staff in Iowa City work with courage
and dedication to enforce the laws fairly, to reduce crime and violence, and in general to
improve the quality of life for everyone in this community; and
Whereas, the dedicated men and women who have chosen Law Enforcement as a
career often face unknown or extraordinary risk and danger in preserving our freedom
and security; and
Whereas, these women and men are fathers and mothers, sisters and brothers, sons and
daughters, and so we give gratitude to their families for supporting them in their career;
and
Whereas, officers of the Iowa City Police Department play a growing role as ones who
promote harmony and mutual respect among citizens in an increasingly diverse
population; and
Whereas, as we wish to give everyone an opportunity to appreciate and thank the men
and women of the Iowa City Police Department who dedicate their lives to public service.
