HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-08-15 ProclamationCity of Iowa City Proclamation Whereas, for over a century, The University Club has played an important role for women in the Iowa City/Coralville area, providing opportunities to socialize with others through luncheons and multiple interest groups. As stated in the University Club's constitution from 1917, the organization was created "to be broad enough to include the activities of the mature women whose interest centers in the University of Iowa, and yet concrete enough to be practical and effective."; and Whereas, the concept of a women's group originated with three individuals in 1917, and was embraced by 55 charter members; and Whereas, the University Club initially included faculty and family members, was opened in 1979 to all women of the community who support the University of Iowa, and has now grown to nearly 700 members; and Whereas, the women of the club have been recognized for undertaking many community projects over the years, including: supporting the war efforts during WWI and WWII, including supporting the Red Cross and sending care packages to soldiers; holding informative meetings on women's suffrage; making doll clothes for young girls in the hospital; receiving the 1955 Hancher award, given for promoting respect to other nations; helping newcomers affiliated with the University of Iowa move into the community, and awarding scholarships annually to female students at the University; Now, therefore, I, James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby declare that Iowa City, will observe on September 1, 2017 The University Club Day I urge all citizens to thank members of The University Club for their efforts on behalf of The University of Iowa and women in the Iowa City / Coralville area.
