Proclamation
Whereas, for over a century, The University Club has played an important role for
women in the Iowa City/Coralville area, providing opportunities to socialize with others
through luncheons and multiple interest groups. As stated in the University Club's
constitution from 1917, the organization was created "to be broad enough to include the
activities of the mature women whose interest centers in the University of Iowa, and yet
concrete enough to be practical and effective."; and
Whereas, the concept of a women's group originated with three individuals in 1917,
and was embraced by 55 charter members; and
Whereas, the University Club initially included faculty and family members, was
opened in 1979 to all women of the community who support the University of Iowa, and
has now grown to nearly 700 members; and
Whereas, the women of the club have been recognized for undertaking many
community projects over the years, including: supporting the war efforts during WWI and
WWII, including supporting the Red Cross and sending care packages to soldiers; holding
informative meetings on women's suffrage; making doll clothes for young girls in the
hospital; receiving the 1955 Hancher award, given for promoting respect to other nations;
