2017 Human Rights Awards winners announced
The Iowa City Human Rights Commission will honor the following individuals during its 34th Annual
Human Rights Awards Breakfast later this month:
• Helen Paige Martin: The Isabel Turner Award for work for fair and ethical treatment and
volunteering time to an organization that works for these rights
• Stella & Bram Elias: The Rick Graf Award for long-term commitment to a specific cause for
the benefit of a specific group of persons
• David Schwindt: The Linda Severson Award for contributions to human rights by an
individual in a service organization
• Gregory L. Hearns: The Bill Reagan Community Award for contributions to human rights
by a business
• Kimberly Shiu: The Kenneth Cmiel Award for actively working in the human rights field in a
dedicated and determined way
The awards breakfast will be held Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017, in the Second Floor Ballroom at the
Iowa Memorial Union, 125 N. Madison St. Breakfast will be available starting at 7:15 a.m., with the
program beginning promptly at 7:30 a.m.
Tickets are $20 per person through October 15, and $25 per person beginning October 16 and must
be purchased by Friday, Oct. 20 at htti)s://34thawardsbreakfast.eventbrite.com. Tickets will not be
sold at the door. Nine reduced -price tickets are available at $10 each on a first-come first-served
basis. Contact Equity Director Stefanie Bowers to request them.
Former Iowa State Senator and activist Jean Lloyd -Jones will provide the keynote address, Finding
Our Swing, Pulling together for the Common Good.
