PROCLAMATION
Whereas, Native Americans, Native Hawaiians and Alaska Natives possessed rich, thriving
cultures long before Europeans came to the North American continent, such that the Framers
were inspired by and modeled our nation in part on the Iroquois Confederacy; and
Whereas, despite generations of reprehensible discrimination during which they were
subjected to violence, deprivation, and forced assimilation, they endured and preserved their
wisdom and skills; and
Whereas, we honor the friendship and cooperation of the many sovereign tribes and the
diverse contributions of the Native American, Native Hawaiians and Alaska Native individuals
who continue to enrich our communities and strengthen our country by their presence;
Now, therefore, 1, James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa do hereby
proclaim November 2017 to be
National Native American Heritage Month
and encourage all residents to celebrate Native American, Native Hawaiians and Alaska Native
history, traditions, and cultures.
