HomeMy WebLinkAboutMarch 2018 Utility InsertWhat do I do during a water main break? When winter temperatures fluctuate, water main breaks are more frequent due to freezing and thawing cycles. Lack of soil moisture exacerbates ground shifting and has created a higher than average number of main breaks the last couple months. A sure sign of a water main break is a loss of pressure when you turn on the faucet, or see water bubbling from the ground or street. If you experience these or any other problems that signal a break, call the Water Division Emergency Line at 319-356-5166. Water services are shut off during repairs, which typically take 3 to 6 hours, but sometimes longer due to unforeseen circumstances. Crews will work until the break is fixed and water services are restored. When the water does come back, you may notice discoloration and sputtering air. Simply let the water run until it clears. Do not use discolored water for drinking, cooking, or laundry. To find out if a water main break is impacting your home or neighborhood, visit www.icgov.org and check for an alert on the home page, or call the Water Division Emergency Line at 319-356-5166. That line is available 24/7, including weekends and holidays. For more info, call the Water Division at 319-356-5160. 3-18 135-03-01-16-A What do I do during a water main break?
