Proclamation
Whereas, May 19th, 2018 is the eighth Kids to Parks Day organized and launched by +`
the National Park Trust held annually on the third Saturday of May; and
Whereas,Kids to Parks Day empowers kids and encourages families to get outdoors
and visit America's parks; and
Whereas,the City of Iowa City maintains 47 parks that offer space for active play,
reflection in nature, and community gathering; and
Whereas, Iowa City Parks and Recreation staff believe that all children should have
the opportunity to learn outdoor recreation skills such as how to swim, how to bike safely
and how to play in the outdoors; and
Whereas, it is important to introduce a new generation to our nation's parks because of
the decline in Park attendance over the last decades; and
Whereas, we should encourage children to lead a more active lifestyle to combat the
issues of childhood obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia;
and
Whereas,Kids to Parks Day is open to all children and adults across the country to
encourage a large and diverse group of participants; and
Whereas,Kids to Parks Day will broaden children's appreciation for nature and the
outdoors.
Now, therefore, I,James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim
May 19th, 2018 to be
Kids to Parks Day
and urge residents of Iowa City to make time on that day to take the children in their lives
to a neighborhood, state or national park.

Whereas, in 1962 President John Kennedy set aside this week to pay tribute to the law
enforcement officers of this nation, and to memorialize those who have fallen in the line
of duty; and
Whereas, the police officers and their support staff in Iowa City work with courage
and dedication to enforce the laws fairly, to reduce crime and violence, and in general to
improve the quality of life for everyone in this community; and
Whereas, the dedicated men and women who have chosen Law Enforcement as a
career often face unknown or extraordinary risk and danger in preserving our freedom
and security; and
Whereas, these women and men are fathers and mothers, sisters and brothers, sons and
daughters, and so we give gratitude to their families for supporting them in their career;
and
Whereas, officers of the Iowa City Police Department play a growing role as ones who
promote harmony and mutual respect among citizens in an increasingly diverse
population; and
Whereas, as we wish to give everyone an opportunity to appreciate and thank the men
and women of the Iowa City Police Department who dedicate their lives to public service.
Now, therefore, I, James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim
the week of May 13-19, 2018 to be
National Police Week
in Iowa City and urge all citizens to participate fully in this observance.

Whereas, the American Public Works Association has celebrated National Public
Works Week since 1960; and
Whereas, public works professionals focus on infrastructure, facilities and services
that are of vital importance to sustainable and resilient communities and to the public
health, high quality of life and well-being of the people of Iowa City; and
Whereas, these infrastructure, facilities and services could not be provided without the
dedicated efforts of public works professionals, who are engineers, managers and
employees from state and local governments and the private sector, who are responsible
for rebuilding, improving and protecting our nation's transportation, water supply, water
treatment and solid waste systems, public buildings, and other structures and facilities
essential for our community members; and
Whereas, it is in the public interest for Iowa City community members, business
owners, community leaders and youth to gain an understanding of the importance of
public works and public works programs in their daily lives.
Now, therefore, I, James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim
the week of May 20 to May 26, 2018 to be
National Public Works Week
in the City of Iowa City and I call upon community members, business leaders and
community organizations to acquaint themselves with the issues involved in providing
and maintaining our public works infrastructure and to recognize the contributions that
our public works professionals make every day to our health and welfare.
