Whereas, Juneteenth National Freedom Day celebrates the day of June 19, 1865, when 'V
Major General Gordon Granger led Union soldiers into Galveston, Texas, bringing news 4
that the Civil War had ended and that the Emancipation Proclamation declared all slaves
to be free; and
Whereas, in Texas and throughout the South, Juneteenth celebrations began on June
19`h of each year—consisting of prayer services, inspirational speeches, readings of the
Emancipation Proclamation, food, games, and dances; and
Whereas, in 1997, during the 105th U.S. Congress, House Joint Resolution 56 and
Senate Joint Resolution 11 were passed, officially recognizing Juneteenth as the
Independence Day Observance of Americans of African descent; and
Whereas, Juneteenth reflects our community's deep belief in liberty and equality for all
individuals, as all benefit from a greater understanding and appreciation of the
experiences of others; and
Whereas, Juneteenth commemorates the strength and resolve of African-Americans
throughout our history, and is an opportunity to celebrate African-American culture, art,
history, and achievement; and
Whereas, the week of June 17–June 23, 2018 will be celebrated as Freedom Week
concluding with a Juneteenth commemoration on Saturday, June 23, from 12 p.m. to 5
p.m. in Mercer Park, 2701 Bradford Dr. Iowa City, IA that will include games,
community education on African American history, as well as a health and financial
wellness fair;
Now, therefore, I, James A. Throgmorton, do hereby recognize June 19, 2018, as
Juneteenth National Freedom Day
in Iowa City, and would encourage community members to attend the commemoration
events being held throughout Freedom Week to recognize this special day.

Whereas, despite advances in medical technology and research,men continue to live an average of
five years less than women with Native American and African-American men having the lowest life
expectancy; and
'Whereas, educating the public and health care providers about the importance of a healthy lifestyle
and early detection of male health problems will result in reducing rates of mortality from disease; and
Whereas, men who are educated about the value that preventative health can play in prolonging their
lifespan and their role as productive family members will be more likely to participate in health
screening; and
Whereas, fathers who maintain a healthy lifestyle are role models for their children and have happier,
healthier children; and
Whereas, the Men's Health Network worked with Congress to develop a national men's health
awareness period as a special campaign to help educate men,boys,and their families about the
importance of positive health attitudes and preventative health practices; and
Whereas, the Men's Health Month web site has been established at www.MensHealthMonth.org and
features resources,proclamations,and information about awareness events and activities, including Wear
Blue for Men's Health; and

Whereas,Iowa City Men's Health Month will focus on a broad range of men's health issues, including
heart disease,mental health, diabetes,and prostate,testicular and colon cancer;and
'Whereas, the residents of this city are encouraged to increase awareness of the importance of a
healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and medical check-ups.
Now, Therefore, I,James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City,do hereby proclaim June 12-18 as
Men's Health Month
In Iowa City and encourage all citizens to pursue preventative health practices and early detection efforts.

Whereas, the lesbian, gay,bisexual, and transgender(LGBT+) communities across the
nation annually celebrate pride in their culture and community in the month of June; and,
Whereas, the annual celebration of Pride began as a collective protest for the rights of
LGBT+ individuals and communities; and
Whereas, the national tradition of celebrating Pride in June is a tribute to the Stonewall
Riots of June, 1969, which are remembered as the launch of the modem LGBT+rights
movement; and
Whereas, transgender women of color, including Marsha P. Johnson and Silvia Rivera,
were primary instigators of the national fight for LGBT+ rights, and often gave their work
and lives to the cause; and
Whereas, the City of Iowa City recognizes the many LGBT+ lives that continue to be
lost each year in pursuit of living out their authentic identities; and
Whereas, the City of Iowa City welcomes and accepts people of diverse sexual
orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions, and is proud to celebrate the
contributions and culture of these citizens; and
Whereas, each year, Iowa City Pride brings together thousands of LGBT+people from
across Iowa and beyond to celebrate their shared identities and experiences; and
Whereas, Iowa City Pride will be celebrating the city's 48th Annual Pride Festival on
June 15th though June 17th of 2018;
Now, therefore, I, James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, Iowa,
do hereby proclaim June 2018 to be
Pride Month
in Iowa City and encourage community members to help celebrate this special month.
