Iowa City has two major streams that carry water through our community. Willow Creek lies on
the west side of the Iowa River and Ralston Creek on the east. Although they usually carry minimal
water flow, a few inches of rain can quickly turn these streams into swiftly moving water, carrying
limbs and yard debris downstream, causing damming and local flooding.
While these occasions are rare, there are measures you can take to safeguard your home, property
and reduce potential flood-related issues. If your property is located near a stream, note that
stream banks must be maintained and kept clear of tree limbs, leaves, and grass clippings, as they
all contribute to damming the stream and preventing drainage. Don’t discard grass clippings, leaves,
or brush on the stream banks or in the stream, as flooding can result. If you live near a stream that
contains storm debris, get together with your neighbors to clear the debris in and along the creek,
as well as the debris that is washed up into yards. Place it at the curb and City staff will dispose of it
properly at no charge to the neighborhood. You must make an appointment in advance with Carol
Sweeting, Public Works Public Information/Education Coordinator, at 319-356-5164.
Together, we can improve water quality and reduce flooding and erosion along Iowa City streams.
