Let’s talk yard waste.www.icgov.org/organics If you leave your home to winter elsewhere, or if you’ll be away from your home for an extended period of time during the winter for school break or the holidays, there are a couple of extra precautions you should take beforehand to prevent major damage while you’re away: 1. Leave your heat on (set your thermostat for 55 degrees or higher) to keep your pipes from freezing and possibly bursting. 2. Arrange for someone to check your home regularly while you’re away.If you plan to be away for more than 30 days, you may also want to have your water service shut off and your account temporarily discontinued so that you are not charged for water, wastewater, recycling, or garbage pick-up while you’re out of town. Request to have your account deactivated at least one week in advance by calling the Water Division at 319-356-5160. A Water Division employee will shut off your water at either the outside shut-off valve (stop box) located in your yard, or at the water meter master valve located inside your home. After this is completed, you will not be charged for utilities except for a monthly stormwater fee of $4.50. Upon your return, a $45 service fee will be charged to reconnect to City services.
