Whereas, Special Olympians have a strong desire to compete and win; and
Whereas, Special Olympians know that bravery is measured in setting goals and
attempting to reach them; and
Whereas, Special Olympians recognize the joy, pride and self-worth, humility and
disappointment, inherent in organized competition; and
Whereas, Special Olympians appreciate the benefits that healthy competition and
physical activity can bring; and
Whereas, Special Olympians give the entire community a chance to gather and share in
their spirit of accomplishment.
Now, therefore, I, James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby
proclaim the month of March 2019 to be
Special Olympics Month
in the City of Iowa City and urge all citizens to commend and support the activities of the
Special Olympics.

'Whereas, service to others is a hallmark of the American character and central to how ;
we meet our challenges; and
Whereas,AmeriCorps participants address the more pressing challenges facing our
communities, from educating for jobs of the 21st century and supporting veterans and
military families to providing health services and helping communities recover from
natural disasters; and
Whereas,AmeriCorps participants serve more than 70,000 locations across the
country, including here in Iowa City, bolstering local organizations that are so vital to our
economic and social well-being; and
Whereas,national service represents a unique public-private partnership that invests in
community solutions and leverages non-federal resources to strengthen community
impact and increase the return on taxpayer dollars; and
Whereas, the Corporation for National and Community Service shares a priority with
mayors, city leaders, county officials, and tribal leaders nationwide to engage citizens,
improve lives, and strengthen communities; and is joining with the national League of
Cities, City of Service, and officials across the country to recognize the impact of service
on the Day of Recognition for National Service on April 2, 2019.
Now, therefore,I, James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim
April 2, 2019, to be
National Service Recognition Day
in the City of Iowa City and encourage residents to recognize the positive impact of
national service in our city and thank those who serve; and to find ways to give back to
their communities.

PROCLAMATION '
` Whereas, the accomplishments and achievements of women were first recognized in 1977 by �' .
beginning the annual commemoration of International Women's Day and later in 1987 by doing
' the same for Women's History Month; and L
Whereas, since our nation's first non-indigenous settlers arrived, women of every race, class
and ethnic background have made historic and monumental contributions to the growth and
strength of the U.S. in countless recorded and unrecorded ways; and
Whereas, women have shaped and continue to fill critical economic, cultural and social roles
in every aspect of life and provide more than half of our nation's workforce; and
Whereas, women have played unique roles throughout the history of the U.S.by providing the
majority of the volunteer labor force and by helping to establish early charitable, philanthropic,
and cultural institutions; and
Whereas, women are now recognized for their essential contributions in the fields of science,
technology, engineering, mathematics, law, medicine, social sciences, humanities and the arts;
and
Whereas, women have served our country courageously in the military and have aided our
nation in every conflict and war, and have continuously worked to advance peace throughout the
world to create a more fair and just society for all; and
Whereas, women have served as early leaders in the forefront of every major progressive
movement - securing suffrage, advancing the abolitionist movement, emancipation movement,
industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement, equal rights movements, social justice
movements,women's health rights, fair housing, equal wage and opportunity movements; and
Whereas,throughout history, women have driven humanity forward on the path to a more
equal and just society, contributing in innumerable ways to our character and progress as a
people both nationally and internationally.
Now, Therefore, I,James A. Throgmorton,Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim March
8 as
International Women's Day
and the month of March 2019 to be recognized as
Women's History Month
