Job Summary
Under immediate direction, performs work in the maintenance and cleaning of City buildings, facilities
and grounds.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
Sweeps, mops, waxes, buffs, scrubs, and cleans floors and stairwells; vacuums, extracts and
cleans carpeted areas; washes windows and walls; cleans and sanitizes restrooms, dusts, empties
and cleans waste receptacles empties recycling materials bins; transfers materials to designated
outside receptacles.
Cleans fountains, polishes metal work; dusts, waxes, washes and polishes furniture and woodwork
as directed.
Follows instructions regarding use of chemicals and supplies.
Performs or assists with minor building repairs; reports need for other repairs.
Maintains and organizes equipment and materials used in building maintenance; performs minor
plumbing, electrical and heating ventilation, air conditioning work; orders and purchases supplies;
monitors building temperatures.
Responds to work orders.
Moves, delivers and organizes supplies as directed.
Replaces light bulbs; turns lights on and off; locks and opens doors and windows.
Secures building when not in use.
Reports unauthorized occupants.
Attends to building emergencies when necessary.
Assists departments and divisions as directed.
Maintains surrounding walks and grounds; picks up litter outside building areas; assists with snow
removal work.

Operates City vehicles and other job related equipment.
Assists with room/building preparation for meetings or events as directed.
Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace
and community.
Performs other related duties as required.
Physical and Environmental Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands
to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally
required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally
lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision,
distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical
parts; high, precarious places; and outside weather conditions.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Minimum Education, Experience and Certification
Three months experience required. Must be able to perform routine duties reliably under minimal
supervision and must have ability to work independently. Attention to detail required. Valid driver’s
license with satisfactory driving record required. Must be 18 years of age per Iowa Code 92.8. Must
pass criminal background check. FBI fingerprint screening will be required for facility access to
Iowa City Police Department.
Preferred Education, Experience and Certification
Six months experience in janitorial or building maintenance; or an equivalent combination of training
and experience preferred.
