HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-10-15 ProclamationItem Number: 3.a. i CITY OE IOWA CITY www.icgov.org October 15, 2019 ATTACHMENTS: Description Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery Day proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION ...., . the City fl City is committed to ensuring the safety and security of ...., living in and visiting our city; and Whereas, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and Whereas, between the hours of 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM are the peak alarm times for fire deaths—when people tend to be asleep; and Whereas, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths in the United States resulted from fires in homes with inoperable smoke alarms or no smoke alarms; and Whereas, the designation of a special day to remind residents of Iowa City to change the batteries in their smoke alarms, timed to coincide with the fall ritual of changing clocks, would greatly diminish the chance of this tragedy occurring in Iowa City; and Whereas, smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years; and Whereas, November 3rd, 2019 is the day the citizens of Iowa City change their clocks from daylight savings time to standard time. Now, Therefore, I James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim November 3rd, 2019 to be Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery Day in Iowa City and urge all residents to change their smoke alarm batteries, install new smoke alarms where needed, and replace smoke alarms if they are ten years old or older. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the United Nations was founded in 1945, and the anniversary of the day on which the UN Charter came into force is observed each year on October 24; and Whereas, the United Nations is a global multilateral organization comprised of 193 Member States; and Whereas, the United Nations seeks to address and solve some of the world's most pressing challenges related to peace and security, human rights, climate change, sustainable development, food security, and humanitarian and health emergencies; and Whereas, in 2015, all 193 Member States adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals—also referred to as the Global Goals—to work toward a more just and sustainable future for all; and Whereas, a recent poll conducted by the Better World Campaign in 2019 reveals that American support for the United Nations is at a 10 -year high; and Whereas, the United Nations Association of the USA is a movement of Americans who believe that our interests and values can best be advanced by supporting the lifesaving work of the United Nations; and Whereas, the United Nations Association of the USA has more than 20,000 members across 200 chapters in the United States; and Whereas, the Johnson County Chapter of UNA-USA is committed to taking local action to support the Global Goals and the work of the United Nations.
