Engineering
Job Summary
Under immediate direction, maintains, constructs and repairs City streets, sidewalks, catch basins and
storm drains. Removes snow and leaves from roadways.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
Performs street maintenance duties; prepares grade and/or subgrade for cement and asphalt
replacement of City streets; assists with crack sealing, jack hammering, shoveling and finish work on
cement; patches potholes.
Sets traffic control devices at worksites and in emergency situations.
Operates a variety of light and heavy equipment including dump truck with sweepers, end loaders,
sanders, backhoes, tamper, air compressors with jack hammers, skid loaders, leaf equipment and
various hand tools.
Hauls materials to and from sites.
Removes leaves and debris from roadways in very dusty conditions; cuts brush in extreme
temperatures.
Assists with street sweeping, removing debris from roadways.
Assists with spring sweeping; transfers sweepings to landfill by dump truck.
Removes snow and ice from roadways during winter months.
Cleans, maintains and constructs catch basins and storm drains on streets and creeks.
Maintains equipment and cleans interior and exterior of vehicles and equipment when needed.
Assists other departments as needed.
Performs first call.

Cleans alleyways; plans routes for downtown alleyway cleaning; determines number of staff needed
to accomplish task.
Checks equipment, fluids and tires daily.
Inspects snowplows weekly during snow season.
Assists with signage and pavement marking removal and installation as needed.
Performs on-call duties.
Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace

Performs all other related duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger,
handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to
stand, walk, climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch or
crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or
move more than 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include
close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust
focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather
conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and moving traffic. The
employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, risk of
electrical shock and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
Minimum Education, Experience and Certification
High school diploma or equivalent required. Four to six months experience in street construction and
maintenance required. Must live within 17 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one
year of appointment to the position. Valid State of Iowa Commercial Learner’s permit required upon 1st
day in position. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake and tanker
endorsements required within 6 months of hire. Satisfactory driving record required. This position is
subject to federal drug testing requirements including screening through the FMCSA Clearinghouse. A
pre-employment drug screen is required. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background
check.
Preferred Education, Experience and Certification
Seven to twelve months of related experience or training preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of street construction and maintenance procedures. Skills in the operation of light and
heavy equipment including trucks, end loaders, sanders, back hoe, jack hammers, snow removal
equipment and various hand tools. Ability to read and comprehend route maps and work instructions.
Ability to read tape measure to cut lumber or figure area to order materials. Ability to prepare written
work records.
