HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWII - StreetsCITY OF IOWA CITY - Job Description Job Class #08-06 FLSA Non-Exempt Civil Service Identification Position Title: Maintenance Worker II - Streets Department: Public Works Division: Streets & Traffic Engineering Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent/Superintendent of Streets & Traffic Engineering Job Summary Under general direction, operates a variety of light and heavy equipment used in the maintenance of City streets. Performs street construction and maintenance tasks. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Constructs and repairs concrete and asphalt streets, driveways, sidewalks, catch basins, curbs and gutters. Operates light and heavy equipment in the maintenance of City streets; removes sections of cement and asphalt in City streets; replaces sections with concrete or asphalt using forms and calculating grades. Performs mudjacking and crack sealing duties. Installs new street signs and repairs existing signs that are faded or damaged. Maintains pavement markings including street markings, parking stalls, crosswalks, school crossings and stop bars. Operates equipment for snow and ice removal on City streets including trucks, sanders and end loader. Operates street sweepers to clean streets. Performs indoor and outdoor remodeling. Maintains and cleans machines and equipment. Participates in leaf removal program; operates leaf machine. Serves as crew leader on selected job assignments. Assists other departments on City-wide emergencies like water main breaks. Sets signs for work zone safety at job sites. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, high, precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold and extreme heat. Must be able to work in close proximity to traffic and perform traffic control. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud. Minimum Education, Experience and Certification High school diploma or equivalent required. One year of experience in street construction and maintenance required. Forklift certification required. Must live within 17 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the position. Valid Iowa Class B commercial driver's license with satisfactory driving record required. Iowa Class A commercial driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsements required within 6 months of hire. This position is subject to federal drug testing requirements including screening through the FMCSA Clearinghouse. A pre-employment drug screen is required. Must be 18 years of ager per Iowa Code 92.8. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience and Certification Two years of experience in street construction and maintenance preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of street construction and maintenance procedures. Skills in the operation of light and heavy equipment including trucks, end loaders, sanders, back hoe, jack hammers, snow removal equipment and various hand tools. Ability to weld and fabricate. Ability to read and comprehend Job Class #08-06 Streets & Traffic Engineering Page 3 Updated 01/16/2020 assignment sheets, route maps, work instruction and equipment maintenance manuals. Ability to read and understand technical materials and manuals. Ability to calculate cubic yards and tons to fill cement and asphalt voids. Ability to read tape measure to cut lumber or figure area to order materials. Ability to prepare written work records.
