HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWII - Water DistributionCITY OF IOWA CITY - Job Description Job Class #07-07 FLSA Non-Exempt Civil Service Identification Position Title: Maintenance Worker II - Water Distribution Department: Public Works Division: Water Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent – Water / Water Superintendent Job Summary Under general direction, installs, maintains and repairs the City’s water distribution system. Operates heavy equipment to perform general and emergency construction, maintenance and repair of water mains and related facilities. Performs location of underground water and fiber utilities, water taps and related water customer service work. Investigates customer service complaints. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Installs, repairs and maintains water mains, lines, hydrants and valves of the water distribution system. Installs, repairs and maintains fire hydrants and valves; conducts hydrant flushing and flow testing. Mentors personnel on proper equipment operation and water distribution procedures, policies and materials. Ensures that water is safe and clean for the community through proper operation and maintenance of the distribution system. Makes necessary repairs to water system; locates leaks and repairs mains. Performs emergency duties related to water main breaks; responds to after-hour emergency calls; performs on-call duties. Serves as crew leader for on-call projects as well for selected job assignments. Operates backhoe, cement breaker, dump trucks and bore machine; uses specialized equipment to find valves and leak locations. Operates heavy digging and construction equipment and various hand tools; provides taps for City projects and contractors. Measures valves and hydrants; prepares written records. Performs basic mathematical calculations; calculates measurements for construction and pipe location. Reads and comprehends route maps and work instructions. Utilizes software applications such as mapping, database, spreadsheets and word processing to log activities and prepare reports. Works with contractors to ensure proper/approved materials usage and installation. Collects water samples and conducts pressure tests and flushes. Locates water mains and services. Conducts assessment of inventory annually for budget development. Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. Performs all other related duties as assigned. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, working in confined spaces and communicable diseases. The noise level in the work environment may require hearing protection. Minimum Education, Experience and Certification High school diploma or equivalent required. Two years of experience in heavy labor and construction or equivalent required. Iowa DNR Grade I Water Distribution Certification required within one year of appointment. Iowa DNR Grade II Water Distribution Certification required within three years of appointment. Must live within 17 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the position. Valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record required. Valid commercial driver’s license instruction permit required within 90 days of hire. Valid Iowa Class A Job Class #07-07 Water Page 3 Updated 10/26/2022 commercial driver’s license with tank and air brake endorsements within 6 months of hire. This position is subject to federal drug testing requirements including screening through the FMCSA Clearinghouse. A pre-employment drug screen is required. Must be 18 years of age per Iowa Code 92.8. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience and Certification Iowa DNR Grade II Water Distribution Certification preferred. Three years of experience in water system installation and repair preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of City street locations and water systems. Knowledge of basic plumbing procedures and installing and maintaining water distribution systems. Skills in the operation of heavy digging and construction equipment and various hand tools. Ability to read and comprehend route maps and work instructions. Ability to measure valves and hydrants and prepare written records. Ability to prepare written work records. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculation and calculate measurements for construction and pipe location.
