HomeMy WebLinkAboutSenior MW - Water PlantCITY OF IOWA CITY - Job Description Job Class #14-05 FLSA Non-Exempt Civil Service Identification Position Title: Senior Maintenance Worker – Water Plant Department: Public Works Division: Water Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent – Water / Water Superintendent Job Summary Under general direction, serves as group leader in maintaining and repairing pumps, motors, valves and gauges in water treatment processes. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Inspects and evaluates plant equipment, supplies and services; implements preventive maintenance program. Schedules and prioritizes maintenance of plant equipment, staffing needs, training needs and outside contractor services. Coordinates work teams on various aspects of complex plant control construction or processing equipment in the plant. Delegates and monitors assigned personnel on a rotational basis in repair and maintenance duties at the treatment plant. Trains assigned employees in maintenance procedures and appropriate skill development; ensures that staff is trained in safety and keeps the facility free from hazards. Establishes technical and safety procedures and standards; maintains maintenance safety programs; maintains programs and records related to predictive, preventive and emergency repairs of the water purification plant. Reviews, maintains and presents daily logs, schedules and reports; inspects and evaluates plant equipment for installation, modification, redesign and/or development. Orders supplies, equipment and materials as necessary; maintains inventory and system. Contacts technical representatives, equipment vendors and suppliers; solicits bids and purchases supplies and equipment as needed. Monitors work of outside contractors and evaluates compliance with contractual agreements. Assists Water Superintendent by consulting with other division group leaders; evaluates plant performance; performs special projects. Evaluates systems such as heating ventilation, air conditioning, electrical and security. May perform routine or emergent electrical switching operation to facilitate maintenance, plant shut - down and restart by generator, in the event of power outage or due to local energy compliance. Provides input to division goals including budget development and determination of maintenance priorities. Performs emergency duties related to water main breaks; responds to after-hour emergency calls; performs on-call duty. Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. Performs all other related duties as assigned. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, vibration and communicable disease. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Minimum Education, Experience and Certification High school diploma or equivalent required. One year of related experience and/or training in water plant maintenance in a supervisory or lead capacity required. Iowa DNR Grade III Water Operator License required. Must live within 17 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the position. Valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record required. Valid Iowa Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank endorsement required within 90 days of hire. This position is subject to federal drug testing requirements including screening through the FMCSA Clearinghouse. A pre-employment drug screen is required. Must be 18 years of age per Iowa Code 92.8. Must pass criminal background check. Job Class #14-05 Water Page 3 Updated 01/17/2020 Preferred Education, Experience and Certification Two years of post-high school education from an educational institution accredited by a DOE recognized accreditation body in a related field preferred. Four years of experience in a water plant preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of water treatment processes and related equipment. Knowledge of Occupational Safety Health Administration, and Iowa Department of Natural Resources regulations concerning water treatment. Knowledge of electrical, plumbing and mechanical maintenance methods. Knowledge of wells and lime softening desirable. Skills in the operation of computers, SCADA control systems and specialized equipment used in water treatment processes. Skills in organizing and directing multiple projects and work teams simultaneously. Skills in oral and written communications. Ability to troubleshoot computer and mechanical equipment malfunctions. Ability to read and interpret technical materials and blueprints, specifications, electrical schematics, gauges, charts and data sheets. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and calculate capacities, flows and quantities. Ability to prepare written reports and logs.
