National Historic Preservation Act (1966):
• Established a Nationwide program
Encourages preservation and wise use of historic resources
Established the National Register of historic places
Clinton Street looking north, 1908
• Established State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO)
• 1980 amendment to the Act created the Certified Local Government Program
Certified Local Government (CLG) Program
Encourages historic preservation at the local level
Encourages local government use of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Historic Preservation
Provides technical assistance through SHPO
Provides funding opportunities for preservation activities
