City of Iowa City
PROCLAMATION
Whereas, in 2009, Rachell Crandall, head of Transgender Michigan, founder
International Transgender Day of Visibility to complement Transgender Day of
Remembrance; and
Whereas, while Transgender Day of Remembrance memorializes those we have lost,
Transgender Day of Visibility celebrates the living, educates the public, and reduces
transphobia; and
Whereas, this day is dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments and victories of
transgender and gender -expansive people, while raising awareness of the ongoing
discrimination, harassment, and violence they still suffer; and
Whereas, we recognize over one million Americans are transgender and have bravely
overcome significant hardships to live their authentic selves; and
Whereas, we come together as a community to advance the cause of transgender
equality, and we acknowledge that far too many transgender people, especially those of
color, continue to face profound threats to their safety and well-being; and
Whereas, we value our transgender and gender -expansive residents and visitors, and
their contributions to this community; and
Whereas, as efforts to limit the rights of transgender and gender -expansive people
continue, we pledge as a community to support and uplift them;
Now, Therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim March
