Arbor Day proclamation
Item Number: 2.a.
City of Iowa City
PROCLAMATION
Whereas, the coming of Spring produces a renewal of interest in tree planting for
beauty, shade, conservation, and many other purposes beneficial to all people; and
Whereas, the observation of Arbor Day has long been characterized by the planting
and preservation of trees; and
Whereas, trees in Iowa City beautify our community, increase property values, reduce
pollution, lower energy costs, and enhance the economic vitality of business areas; and
Whereas, because trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, having a diverse
and healthy tree population constitutes a major part of Iowa City's effort to mitigate
against climate change; and
Whereas, trees can provide natural air conditioning; the evaporation from a single
tree can produce the cooling effect of 10 room size air conditioners operating 20 hours
a day; and
Whereas, evergreen trees can be used to reduce wind speed and thus loss of heat
from our homes in the winter by as much as 10 to 50 percent.
Now, therefore, 1, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim
April 24, 2020, to be
Arbor Day
in Iowa City, and I hereby urge all citizens to participate in tree planting and preservation
projects throughout the year.

Fair Housing Month proclamation
Item Number: 2.b.
City of Iowa City
PROCLAMATION
Whereas, April marks the 52 -year anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act
of 1968, which seeks to eliminate discrimination in housing opportunities and to
affirmatively further housing choices for all persons; and
Whereas, the ongoing struggle for dignity and housing opportunity for all is not the
exclusive province of the Federal government; and
Whereas, vigorous local efforts to combat discrimination can be as effective, if not
more so, than Federal efforts; and
Whereas, illegal barriers to equal opportunity in housing, no matter how subtle,
diminish the rights of all;
Whereas, the Iowa City Human Rights Commission fully supports the intent and
purpose of the Federal Fair Housing Act, the state of Iowa fair housing act and Iowa City
fair housing laws and follows policies and practices in order to achieve their goal.
Now, therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City do hereby proclaim the month
of April 2020 as
Fair Housing Month
and encourage all to abide by the letter and spirit of the Fair Housing Act.

Marriage Equality Day proclamation
Item Number: 2.c.
City of Iowa City
PROCLAMATION
Whereas, from the very beginning of our nation, a bedrock principle of our society has
been that we are all created equal; and
Whereas, while not everyone has historically been treated equally in practice, as time
passes we persist in the quest to continually improve the condition of all; and
Whereas, love is one of the most fundamental of human emotions, often publicly
memorialized by marriage, which also confers societal protections and advantages not
enjoyed by unmarried couples; and
Whereas, in the words of US Supreme Court Justice Kennedy, "no union is more
profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion,
sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater
than once they were;" and
Whereas, on April 3, 2009, the Iowa Supreme Court chose love over bigotry in
deciding that the Iowa Constitution gave same-sex couples the right to marry in Varnum
v. Brien, this is slightly more than six years before the US Supreme Court, in Obergefell
v. Hodges, found that same right in the United States Constitution; and
Whereas, this year marks the I lth anniversary of that Iowa Supreme Court decision,
that allowed the freedom to marry the person one loves which is surely an "unalienable
right' as sacred as "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness;"
Now, Therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim April 3,
2020 to be
Marriage Equality Day
