They selected October because public schools are in session and existing traditions, such as Coming Out Day and the first and second LGBT Marches on Washington, were in October; and Whereas, LGBTQ History Month has been endorsed by GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the National Education Association and other national organizations. In 2006 Equality Forum assumed responsibility for providing content, promotion and resources for LGBTQ History Month; and Whereas, LGBTQ history month is an annual month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements. The LGBT community is the only community worldwide that is not taught its history at home, in public schools or in religious institutions. LGBTQ History Month provides role models, builds community and makes the civil rights statement about the extraordinary national and international contributions of LGBTQ persons; and Whereas, this past Thursday, marked the beginning of the 26th annual celebration of LGBTQ History Month, a time dedicated to recognizing important moments in the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. This October is set to remind both the LGBTQ and wider communities of the important roles' LGBTQ people have taken in creating the social, legal, and political worlds we live in today. Iowa City Pride and the Iowa City Human Rights Commission encourage all community members to use this opportunity to explore the place of LGBTQ people in society and the changes they are making in their communities. Now, Therefore, 1, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2020 as LGBTQ History Month in Iowa City.
