City of Iowa City
PROCLAMATION
Whereas, Careers in Construction Month is an annual month designated to help increase
public awareness of the opportunities available in construction trades professions; and
Whereas, during this month, employers, associations and schools are encouraged to conduct
job fairs, panel discussions and local community events to inform students of the vast
employment opportunities in construction; and
Whereas, the construction industry is one of our nation's largest industries, employing more
than 5 million individuals in the U.S.; and
Whereas, we are pleased to honor the construction trades professional and the critical role
they play in the development of Iowa City; and
Whereas, through a collaborative effort that reaches policymakers as well as local educators
and high school students, our goal is to effectively address some of the issues that have
contributed to chronic labor shortages and misperceptions of careers in construction, to develop a
skilled workforce for the future; and
Whereas, the NAHB Student Chapters program is dedicated to enriching the educational
experience of students by offering them fust -hand exposure to the real world of the building
industry through NAHB membership, educational programming and networking opportunities.
Now, Therefore, 1, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the month of
October 2020 as

Change Your Clock, Change Your Batteries proclamation
City of Iowa City
PROCLAMATION
w nereas, the City of Iowa City is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all
those living in and visiting our city; and
Whereas, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes
are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and
Whereas, between the hours of 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM are the peak alarm times for fire
deaths—when people tend to be asleep; and
Whereas, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths in the United States resulted from fires
in homes with inoperable smoke alarms or no smoke alarms; and
Whereas, the designation of a special day to remind residents of Iowa City to change
the batteries in their smoke alarms, timed to coincide with the fall ritual of changing
clocks, would greatly diminish the chance of this tragedy occurring in Iowa City; and
Whereas, smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years; and
Whereas, November 1st, 2020 is the day the citizens of Iowa City change their clocks
from daylight savings time to standard time.
Now, Therefore, I Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim
November 1 st, 2020 to be
Change Your Clock,
Change Your Battery Day
in Iowa City and urge all residents to change their smoke alarm batteries, install new
smoke alarms where needed, and to replace smoke alarms if they are ten years old or
older.
