CITY OIF IOWA CITY www.icgov.org October 20, 2020 ATTACHMENTS: Description Careers in Construction Month proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, Careers in Construction Month is an annual month designated to help increase public awareness of the opportunities available in construction trades professions; and Whereas, during this month, employers, associations and schools are encouraged to conduct job fairs, panel discussions and local community events to inform students of the vast employment opportunities in construction; and Whereas, the construction industry is one of our nation's largest industries, employing more than 5 million individuals in the U.S.; and Whereas, we are pleased to honor the construction trades professional and the critical role they play in the development of Iowa City; and Whereas, through a collaborative effort that reaches policymakers as well as local educators and high school students, our goal is to effectively address some of the issues that have contributed to chronic labor shortages and misperceptions of careers in construction, to develop a skilled workforce for the future; and Whereas, the NAHB Student Chapters program is dedicated to enriching the educational experience of students by offering them fust -hand exposure to the real world of the building industry through NAHB membership, educational programming and networking opportunities. Now, Therefore, 1, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2020 as Careers in Construction Month in Iowa City, Iowa, and urge all citizens to join me in this special observance. ayor Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, this 20th day of October 2020 Item Number: 2.b. CITY OIF IOWA CITY www.icgov.org October 20, 2020 ATTACHMENTS: Description Change Your Clock, Change Your Batteries proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION w nereas, the City of Iowa City is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our city; and Whereas, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and Whereas, between the hours of 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM are the peak alarm times for fire deaths—when people tend to be asleep; and Whereas, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths in the United States resulted from fires in homes with inoperable smoke alarms or no smoke alarms; and Whereas, the designation of a special day to remind residents of Iowa City to change the batteries in their smoke alarms, timed to coincide with the fall ritual of changing clocks, would greatly diminish the chance of this tragedy occurring in Iowa City; and Whereas, smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years; and Whereas, November 1st, 2020 is the day the citizens of Iowa City change their clocks from daylight savings time to standard time. Now, Therefore, I Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim November 1 st, 2020 to be Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery Day in Iowa City and urge all residents to change their smoke alarm batteries, install new smoke alarms where needed, and to replace smoke alarms if they are ten years old or older.
