City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the United Nations is an ihtemational organization founded in 1945, consisting of 193 Member States, dedicated to maintaining international peace and security, promoting development, providing humanitarian aid, upholding international law, protecting human rights, and promoting democracy; and Whereas, on December 10, 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; and Whereas, at that time, the Cold War had begun, the world was still recovering from World War II, the Korean Conflcit was brewing, and the United Nations recognized the need to declare all humans, regardless of any factors that separate them, share fundamental rights; and Whereas, humanity is now engaged in a war against a common enemy, a virus that knows no national boundaries; and Whereas, "Recover Better: Stand Up for Human Rights," the United Nations' theme for recognizing this day in 2020, reflects the need to center human rights in recovery efforts; and Whereas, COVID-19 has functioned as yet another lens through which entrenched systemic inequalities, exclusion, and discrimination are exposed; and Whereas, Human Rights Day is an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of transformative action in building a world that fosters more humane, resilient and just societies; and Whereas, all Iowa Citians can do their part to "Recover Better" by wearing masks, supporting health care workers, donating to organizations that support those who have lost jobs and health during the pandemic, shopping at local small businesses, and following local, state, and national safety recommendations. INCITY OE IOWA CITY www.icgov.org December 1, 2020 ATTACHMENTS: Description Iowa City Host Noon Lions Club proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the Iowa City Host Noon Lions Club was chartered on December 15, three years after the founding of Lions Clubs International; and Whereas, Helen Keller, famed sight and hearing impaired author, activist and lecturer, asked all Lions to become her "Knights of the Blind"; and Whereas, the mission of the Iowa City Host Noon Lions Club is To Create and Foster a Spirit of Understanding Among All People for Humanitarian Needs by Providing Voluntary Services Through Community Involvement and International Cooperation; and Whereas, with the support of volunteers and the Greater Iowa City and Johnson County Communities, the Iowa City Host Noon Lions Club provides transportation for human corneas across Iowa for transplantation, and provides assistance for individuals in need to obtain hearing aids and eyeglasses; and Whereas, in a joint project known as KidSight with the Department of Opthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital, dedicated to enhancing the early detection and treatment of vision impairments in young children, the Iowa City Noon Lions Club provides FREE vision screening for infants and young children (ages 6 months through Kindergarten) throughout the community. Since year 2000. this club has screened 17.759 children. with 1,091, or over 6% of these children being referred for follow-up vision care; and Whereas, the Iowa City Host Noon Lions Club provides financial assistance and support to the Iowa City Public Library, the Crisis Center of Iowa City, The Iowa City Free Medical Clinic, the Iowa Lions Eye Bank, and the Leader Dog Program in order to provide guide dogs for the visually impaired; and Whereas, the Iowa City Host Noon Lions Club is a part of Lions Club International, a group of over 1.4 million members in over 48,000 clubs worldwide. Now, Therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby recognize The Iowa City Host Noon Lions Club for 100 years of dedicated service and commitment to the Iowa City Community.
