COURT HILL TRAIL & NEW SCHOOL BIKEWAYS
The Court Hill Trail provides a useful foundation for bicycle commuting to school from neigh-
borhoods in east Iowa City. Bicyclists will navigate two short (one-block) sections of riding on
Arbor Drive and Brookside Drive— both are low-volume streets. Crossings at Scott Blvd. and 1st Avenue both have pedestrian refuge islands and are marked for cars to yield to pedestrians
and bicyclists. Be sure to look both ways and make eye contact with drivers (to ensure they see
you) before entering the road way.
For students traveling from the Longfellow Neighborhood, series of rela-
tively low-volume streets are marked with BIKEWAY and wayfinding signs to help navigate to South East Jr. High and City High.
Students who bicycle or walk on sidewalks should watch for cars at all in-
tersections and driveways. Be especially alert to turning traiffc, including those turning right on red.

Two short sections of
on-street riding are required in this area.
A bike ride from Scott Park to
Southeast Junior high will take about 15 minutes. This popular
trail is well shaded for hot
days. Walking and biking are
good training for future teen-
age drivers.
