Hello Parks and Recreation Community!
Welcome to the 2021/2022 Winter-Spring issue of the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Guide. In this edition, you
will find information about activities and programs offered from January into May. We encourage you to explore
our newly designed park and amenities map, where we hope you discover park features that are lesser-known in
our park system. Maps can be found online at icgov.org/Parks. Many trails in Iowa City parks are cleared of snow
to allow for winter outdoor activities. Bundle up and take a hike!
As you browse through our guide, you will find many activities, programs, and events available for everyone to
enjoy during the winter and spring months. Not only will you find many opportunities for your personal growth
and enrichment, but you will also find a variety of ways to get your family and friends involved in our community.
Be sure to check our online registration system for complete details at icgov.org/ActivityRegistration.
If you are a returning participant, welcome back! If you are new here and haven't tried our programs or events
before, we encourage you to have some fun and get plugged in.
All the Best,

Covid-19 Update
Covid-19 has presented many changes to our normal routines. All
decisions made by the Parks and Recreation Department are made to
keep you, our users of the City's parks and recreation programs, safe
during this pandemic. We will continue to monitor the safety
precautions in place and adjust if needed.
We've been there for your family for a lot of your firsts. First swim in
the pool, first TKD class, and first home runs. We have a lot more
firsts to offer your family, but we need your help following the Covid-
19 safety precautions.
For updates on all City services related to COVID, visit
icgov.org/Coronavirus.

Account Credits & Transfers
Request for account credits and transfers must be made at least three business days prior to the first class meeting. Prorated
credits for health reasons may be considered after the program begins. Requests must be made in writing to the appropriate
program supervisor. A doctor’s certificate may be required. No account credits will be given for programs that have concluded.
Contact the program supervisor for account credits.
Americans with Disabilities Act & Inclusive Recreation Services
The Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department (ICPRD) is pleased to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA),
which prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability. In addition, the ADA requires that all people be given the opportunity to
recreate in an “integrated setting.”
Inclusion within ICPRD means that all people are welcome to participate in the same recreation programs and activities.
Reasonable accommodations are provided to enable an individual’s successful participation in a program. Some minimum
eligibility requirements (age, level of participation), must be met in order to participate. Examples of accommodations include, but
are not limited to, activity modification, adaptive equipment, changing staff-to-participant ratios, additional staff training,
effective communications for persons with hearing impairments, financial assistance, and/or monitoring accommodations for
effectiveness.
Please contact RaQuishia Harrington at 319-356-5228 or raquishia-harrington@iowa-city.org at least two weeks prior to the
activity start date to ensure your individual needs are met.
Class Size
Limits are placed on the size of some classes to assure quality instruction. Registration is first-come, first-served. Classes are
reviewed at least three working days prior to the start and those with insufficient enrollment are subject to cancellation.
Registration must be made prior to participation in any Parks and Recreation activity.
Facility Age Requirement
Only youth currently 12 years old and up will be allowed into Recreation Division facilities without an adult but must have a
facility pass. Youth 11 years old and under must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.
Facilities Pass
An ICPRD-issued facilities pass is required during free play in the gym, game room, and fitness room. The pass system allows staff
to better assess community needs by monitoring facility usage to help plan future services and amenities. Patrons 16 years of age
and older can be issued a pass during open facility hours. Youth ages 12-15 years can be issued a pass provided a parent/guardian
is present to complete it. Note: Facility policy prohibits youth 11 years and under from using the facility, including pools, unless
accompanied by an adult, or individual 16 years or older.
How to Sign Up for Cancellation Information
Go to icgov.org/Rainoutline and select Email and Text Alerts. Select the extension you prefer to be notified on.
Non-Resident Fees
Iowa City residents (persons living inside Iowa City city limits), through property taxes, contribute to the operation of the Parks
and Recreation Department. Non-resident fees are assessed to our non-resident patrons to contribute to the overall financing of
the Department on an equitable basis with our residents.

you and/or your children may be videotaped or photographed by a Parks
and Recreation employee, volunteer, or photographer. Photos may be

pictures, or by the media.
Recreation registration and facility rentals serve as permission for use of
your image. Due to the public nature of our programs and facilities, we
cannot be responsible for photographs taken by the media or others.
Should you have any concerns, contact the Iowa City Recreation Division

Parks and Trails
Iowa City is home to over 50 parks, natural areas, and open spaces. Almost 100 percent (99.4 %) of Iowa
City residents live within 1/2 of a mile of open space areas, including the City’s parks, schoolyards, or
natural areas. The Parks and Forestry Division provides and maintains adequate open space, parks, and
trails for the residents of Iowa City.

Dogs in Iowa City Parks
The City of Iowa City is a pet-friendly community. In order to ensure that all users
have a great recreational experience, we need pet owners to follow City rules and
regulations related to walking dogs in public areas, parks, open spaces, and trails.
Owners must keep their dogs on a leash and are responsible for picking up after
their pets.
Iowa City Parks and Recreation has two dog parks where dogs are allowed off-
leash. They provide opportunities for exercise, socialization, and training. All dogs
must display either a park permit tag or a day pass to use the off-leash dog parks.
Owners without permits or passes may be fined. Iowa City residents must have a
current City of Iowa City Animal License to get a dog park tag. Proof of rabies
vaccination is also required to use the dog parks.

WE'RE
GETTING
SHADY
Root 4 Trees
Trees are an intrinsic part of the quality of life in Iowa City. Trees can improve a neighborhood’s appearance
and provide health benefits for residents. They can offer shade and provide a windbreak, which reduces
energy bills. They also remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, decrease runoff, and provide habitat for
birds and other urban wildlife. Because they have such a variety of benefits that improve our environment,
they are an important part of the City’s Climate Action Plan.
Help the City grow and expand our tree canopy coverage and tree diversity. You can participate by filling out
an application to receive a tree voucher and save 50% OFF on the purchase of a tree at participating Iowa City
locations. Trees obtained through the Root for Trees voucher program must be planted on the purchaser's
private property. For residents wishing to plant their tree in the Right-of-Way, a no-fee permit will require
City approval before purchasing the tree.
Must be an Iowa City resident to apply. For more information about Root 4 Trees, visit icgov.org/Root4Trees.
