HomeMy WebLinkAboutRecreation Program Supervisor - Special Events & CommunicationsCITY OF IOWA CITY - Job Description Job Class #14-02A FLSA Exempt Civil Service Identification Position Title: Recreation Program Supervisor – Special Events & Communications Department: Parks & Recreation Division: Recreation Supervisor: Recreation Superintendent Job Summary Under general direction, performs professional duties which involve creating and managing events to engage the community. Leading a broad range of Parks and Recreation programs, services, and facilities for the general public including arts, socialization, science and nature, sports, aquatics, wellness and special events, including programs for persons with disabilities and youth-at-risk. Develops strategic communications to enhance department brand and community engagement through special events and a variety of media. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Develops and sustains community relationships and identifies potential new users to increase program participation and support. Develops and implements special events for the Parks & Recreation Department including four or more large community events per year and several smaller events such as ribbon cuttings, grand openings and neighborhood gatherings. Manages and promotes Farmer’s Market. Coordinates with Recreation staff to create marketing strategies aimed at increasing division branding, participation of programs and facility use. Oversees creation of Parks & Recreation activity guides through design, edits and distribution. Designs and produces informational brochures, press releases and other marketing materials. Responds to customer concerns. Manages dissemination of public announcements and promotional activities related to Recreation programs and facilities. Updates websites; posts weather cancellations, media releases and headlines. Verifies program information and uploads to website. Provides assistance to citizens who have problems with website and online registration. Recruits, selects, trains and supervises hourly Farmer’s Market staff and special events. Evaluates work performance and administers disciplinary actions for hourly staff. Conducts staff meetings with subordinates. Manages on site event management for department events. Interacts and serves as liaison to community organizations, agencies, affiliate groups and special interest groups. Prepares and monitors budget. Recommends and implements goals and objectives and oversees purchase of equipment and supplies. Attends selected meetings of the Parks & Recreation Commission to give oral reports. Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. Performs all other related duties as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience and Certification Bachelor's degree in recreation administration, leisure studies or therapeutic recreation or equivalent from an educational institution accredited by a DOE recognized accreditation body required. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience and Certification Experience in planning and managing special events strongly preferred. Experience in digital communications preferred. Knowledge of community organizations and resources. Skills in the techniques of supervision to plan, assign, coordinate, direct, and monitor customer service employees. Ability to supervise large numbers of employees working at multiple sites. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to read and interpret reports and journals. Ability to prepare written materials including records, reports and promotional materials. Ability to operate computer and other office and recreation equipment.
