Iowa Legal Aid has helpedlow-income Iowanswith their housing problems for over 45 years.Helping them avoid or overcome homelessness is one of Iowa Legal Aid’s primary case acceptance
criterion. Our advocates have a thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local programs and provide free legal advice and representationin eviction hearings and other housing matters.Iowa
Legal Aid has long standing relationships with community social service providers and other agencies throughout Iowa to refer clients to appropriate agencies that can help them, such
as rental assistance programs, energy assistance programs, and other housing programs.
Iowa Legal Aid has received HUD Emergency Solutions Grant funds for many years to provide Homeless Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Services. We have also received HUD Fair Housing Initiatives
Program funds for many years to provide education, training and representation on housing matters. To help with the eviction crisis, Iowa Legal Aid is operating Eviction Diversion Projects
(EDP) in Polk County (Des Moines), Linn County (Cedar Rapids), Scott County (Davenport), Johnson County (Iowa City), and Black Hawk County (Waterloo). The EDO drives systemic change
by providing low-income tenants facing eviction in Polk County with both legal representation and rental assistance for overdue rent at the courthouse before they can be evicted.
