Recent additions to our winter plowing have included Terry Trueblood Recreation Area, Kiwanis/Willow Creek, Sycamore Greenway, and Wetherby Park. The increase in over 7 miles of plowed trails started in 2020. Trails are typically cleared within 24 hours but some of the non-essential transportation routes may take more time to clear. Our Parks crews make every effort to have everything cleared within 48 hours. ICE SKATING Seasonal ice skating is allowed on City Park pond near the new Adventure Playground each winter, when conditions allow for safe skating and ice sports. Safety status is updated on Rainout Line and signs are posted on location when skating is not allowed. Conditions need to be right to develop safe ice thickness and weather that allows our crews to clear snow from the ice and flood the surface to make sure it is smooth. Please keep an eye on RainOutline and the pond signage, as conditions have not been favorable for safe skating conditions the past few years. PRAIRIES Prairies are an ecological powerhouse and the majority of Iowa was once covered in prairie. Now less than .1% of Iowa’s original prairie remains but the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department is doing our part to plant and manage prairies in our parks today. Iowa City Parks are home to an estimated 350 acres of managed prairie and controlled fire is an important conservation management tool that helps keep our prairies thriving. Prairies provide important habitat and resources for wildlife, including grassland birds which are in steep decline because of habitat loss. They also allow us to reduce mowing in our parks, which cuts our costs and fuel use. Prairies sequester carbon in their roots and surrounding soil and their incredibly deep root system helps reduce flooding, erosion, and runoff. We also think they’re really beautiful! GARDEN PLOT REGISTRATION Garden plot registration will open to the public for the 2023 season on Tuesday, April 4, 2023. Registrations will be taken in-person only at the Mercer Park Aquatic Center beginning at 7 a.m. Only one plot registration is permitted per person.
