Emma J. Harvat Hall, City Hall
Commissioners present: Chastity Dillard, Wangui Gathua, Marie Krebs, Lauren Merritt, Clif
Johnson.
Commissioners not present: Eric Harris, Sikowis Nobiss.
Staff present: Stefanie Bowers, Redmond Jones.
Meeting called to order: 7:09 pm.
Reading of Native American Land Acknowledgement: Dillard read the Land Acknowledgement.
Approval of Minutes from May 4, 2023: Dillard moved, and Johnson seconded.
Motion passed 5-0.
Public Comment of Items not on the Agenda: None.
Presentation from Councilor Bergus on the City Council Strategic Plan: Bergus provided an
overview of the strategic plan, highlighting the values of the racial equity, social justice, and
human rights future vision. Which includes accurate cultural-historical perspectives and the work
of the TRC to address inequities in disadvantaged and marginalized populations here in the
community. Bergus also noted the work of the Office of Equity and Human Rights and the future
Outreach Development staff position that will be added to that division.
Next Steps on Phase One of the Facilitator Plan: Jones will forward to the TRC an Excel sheet that
will allow each Commissioner to add to what they believe should be added to their work plan.
Commissioners will discuss and review the work plans at an upcoming meeting.
Staff will send out a poll to see what days and times work best for members of the TRC to meet
with Think Peace for a two-day retreat to train on educational materials that will be useful for
them and community members. The training will be in-person and held in Iowa City.
Commissioners will send staff a note on possible locations if a non-governmental building is
preferred. The training will be approximately 5 hours each day. Possible dates are July 21 & 22,
July 28 & 29, or August 4 & 5. Once a date is established the TRC will work with Think Peace to co-
create an agenda for the two-day training.
As a follow-up from TRC meetings held back in 2021, staff will include a list of organizations that
previously expressed an interest in working with the TRC in the next agenda packet.
