Harvat Hall, City Hall Commissioners present: Chastity Dillard, Wangui Gathua, Marie Krebs, Lauren Merritt, Clif Johnson. Commissioners not present: Eric Harris, Sikowis Nobiss. Staff present: Stefanie Bowers, Redmond Jones. Meeting called to order: 7:09 pm. Reading of Native American Land Acknowledgement: Dillard read the Land Acknowledgement. Approval of Minutes from May 4, 2023: Dillard moved, and Johnson seconded. Motion passed 5-0. Public Comment of Items not on the Agenda: None. Presentation from Councilor Bergus on the City Council Strategic Plan: Bergus provided an overview of the strategic plan, highlighting the values of the racial equity, social justice, and human rights future vision. Which includes accurate cultural-historical perspectives and the work of the TRC to address inequities in disadvantaged and marginalized populations here in the community. Bergus also noted the work of the Office of Equity and Human Rights and the future Outreach Development staff position that will be added to that division. Next Steps on Phase One of the Facilitator Plan: Jones will forward to the TRC an Excel sheet that will allow each Commissioner to add to what they believe should be added to their work plan. Commissioners will discuss and review the work plans at an upcoming meeting. Staff will send out a poll to see what days and times work best for members of the TRC to meet with Think Peace for a two-day retreat to train on educational materials that will be useful for them and community members. The training will be in-person and held in Iowa City. Commissioners will send staff a note on possible locations if a non-governmental building is preferred. The training will be approximately 5 hours each day. Possible dates are July 21 & 22, July 28 & 29, or August 4 & 5. Once a date is established the TRC will work with Think Peace to co- create an agenda for the two-day training. As a follow-up from TRC meetings held back in 2021, staff will include a list of organizations that previously expressed an interest in working with the TRC in the next agenda packet. 2 Follow Up on Communications with ICCSD: There were no updates. Commission Announcements: Johnson mentioned an upcoming event being held as a collaboration between ICOR Boxing and Big Brother Big Sister Johnson County that is being financially funded by Big Grove. Dillard noted an event being held at Mark Twain Elementary School that is being sponsored by the Neighborhood Centers of Johnson and runs from 3-6, this coming Saturday. Adjourned: 8:11 PM.
