HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010-01-12 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born January 15, 1929; and Whereas, in 1954 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a principal leader in the civil rights movement, began a campaign for racial equality through a demonstration which forced the world to reconsider the injustice and humiliation of segregation; and Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spent his life seeking equal rights and justice in a non-violent manner for all people; and Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. served as President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference; and Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964; and Whereas,, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. maintained his convictions even in the face of extreme adversity, threats against self and family and imprisonment; and Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. lived his faith and was personally committed to ensuring basic human rights for all; and Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. made the ultimate sacrifice when his life was taken in 1968; NOW, therefore, I, Matthew Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City do hereby proclaim January 18, 2010, as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in Iowa City and urge all citizens to share in the observance and celebration of Dr. King's humanitarian efforts and unforgettable contributions which inspired the nation to strive towards equal rights for all. -~~~~- Mayor Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, this 12`" day of January, 2010.
