HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010-04-27 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the first wave of the projected 78 million baby boom generation will soon turn 65; and Whereas, older Americans are living longer, staying healthier and living a more active life; and Whereas, older Americans through their legacy of patriotism, volunteer service and responsibility bring communities together and serve as role models for younger generations; and Whereas, Iowa City has had a longstanding interest in supporting services for seniors that support active, engaged and independent lifestyles; and Whereas, Johnson County is identified as a Livable Community for successful aging; and Whereas, for the past 40 years May has been designated as Older Americans Month. NOWT therefore, I, Matthew J. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, one out of every four adults experiences a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year, and one in 10 children has a serious mental or emotional disorder; and WHEREAS, mental illness does not discriminate. It affects adults, children and people of every ethnic, socioeconomic and religious or political background; and WHEREAS, the face of mental illness isn't some stranger. It's our co-workers, our neighbors, our friends, our families and sometimes ourselves; and WHEREAS, suicide is the third leading cause of death for America's youth ages 15-24 and the vast majority of those who die by suicide have a mental illness-often undiagnosed or untreated; and WHEREAS, half of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14, three-quarters by age 24, therefore; treating cases early could reduce enormous disability, before mental illnesses become more severe; and WHEREAS, the National Alliance on Mental Illness Johnson County will hold its annual Walk on May 8 to initiate a community conversation about the impact that mental illness has on every part of our collective lives from primary healthcare and the education system to the faith community, the business community and beyond. NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of May, 2010 and May 2-8 as: Mental Health Month Children's Mental Health Week in Iowa City, and I urge all citizens to increase the awareness and understanding of mental health and be informed of the treatment options available in our county for individuals with mental illness.
