During my time on HCDC, I have gained an increasing knowledge of housing conditions, programs for affordable housing, and the various communitiy services provided in Iowa City. I have greatly enjoyed (if that's the appropriate term) my time on this commission and feel I can continue to contribute to its work. I have been greatly impressed by the committment and innovation of service providers, and feel I have gained an increasingly better grasp of what projects are most needed, and which are more apt to be viable. During my time on HCDC, I have attended all meetings and most site visits and public hearings. I have also been involved with some of the subcommittee work, including assisting with justification memos for CDBG/HOME funds recommendations and planning for the annual Community Celebrations. I have followed thework of the scattered site/ affordable housing group in Johnson County, attended their presentations ove r the last few years, and participated in the recent "River Crossing" discussions. ~niuo-r i~ vni IR PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ADVISORY BOARD? Having served on HCDC since 2005, I feel t am familiar with its scope of work. Each year, the commission reviews applications for CDBG/HOME funds and makes recommendations for funding to the city council, based on the priorities in City Steps. The commission has also held public hearings in neighborhoods most apt to be in need of community services, and made site visits to grant applications. Misrepresentations on this application will constitute just cause for removal of an appointee. .f you fail to answer all the questions, Council may not consider your application. HCDC Application January 2010 Page 1 of 8 WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN MAKE TO THIS AD~/ISORY BOARD IOR STATE REASON FOR APPLYING)? Please see above: as I've served on this commission, I have gained increased knowledge of what the commission's activities, and greater understanding of housing issues and availitliy and communuty needs and services. I h~ a personal interest in the availability of affordable housing and public transit. I am a person of moderate or low income, according to the chart, below. I have a physical impairment/disability that requires that I live within walking distance of almost everywhere I need to be, and the use of public transit. I currently own my apartment, but have been along-time renter and may soon become one again. I have continued to follow trends in rental housing (costs, availabilty, who is served, where rental units are being developed). I have recently become unemployed (this could change in the next couple of weeks, but at the moment, I will become unemployed at the end of June), so I may become even more familiar with Iowa City's community services than I'd prefer. From 1981-1994, I worked in the nonprofit sector providing direct services and administrative leadership in organizations promoting safety from sexual assault, domestic violence, and accessible women's healthcare services. I served as Diversity Resources Coordinator at the UI's Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity (1994-2003), and as Director of Training and Cultural Competence in the UI School of Social Work's National Resource Center for Family Centered Practice (2003-2007). In these roles I provided hundreds of trainings on Title VII related topics and cultural competence issues. I have also taught as Adjunct Faculty on issues of international business, race/gender/class in the U.S., leadership in a diverse society, U.S./Latin American immigration, and diversity, oppression and discrimination. I have seared as a private consultant to nonprofit, public and for-profit organizations on issues of diversity and organizational cultural competence. Throughout all of my work, my greatest learning has come from my experience working in and with the community. I have been an active volunteer in the Iowa City community for years in activities ranging from serving as a Girl Scout leader, PTO co-president, foster parent, public speaker, and event volunteer. ~nvNnT i~ vnr~R PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ADVISORY BOARD? Human Rights Commission Human Rights Commission Application January 2010 Page 1 of 8 WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN MAKE TO THIS ADVISORY BOARD (OR STATE REASON FOR APPLYING)? ,.y hope in participating in this commission is to work with a group of committed individuals to discuss and address key issues facing our community. I am particularly committed to addressing issues of race and class in our community, and have extensive experience working with other White people in exploring issues of racism and White privilege. I am also interested in supporting recent immigrants of all nationalities and statuses in the community, and have been along-standing support of LGBT rights. More than being asingle-issue person, though, I truly want to engage with others in providing leadership on the thorny issues that promise to further divide the Iowa City community, unless we develop new and creative ways to address them. I have recently worked, for example, with the Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County to facilitate community planning sessions toward developing strategies to address the mythic "Southeast Side." I recently spoke at the Kiwanis and The Center (Senior Center) on issues of the "Changing Face of Iowa." I co-chair the Iowa Latino Conference statewide planning committee and am pleased to be partnering with the ICCSD to bring the statewide conference to Iowa City in October 2010. I have worked... with the UAY and other local LGBT groups to address issues facing LGBT teens, partners, and parents. I certainly don't come with any answers, but I would contribute my whole heart to working with others to fashion approaches th might serve to unite the community, rather than those that further divide and disempower. In my understanding, the Human Rights Commission's fundamental goal is to eliminate discrimination of all types and to promote equal opportunity in the Iowa City community. It derives its mandate to do so from the Iowa City Human Rights Ordinance. To this end, it addresses discrimination complaints and engages in a wide variety of educational outreach activities. Misrepresentations on this application will constitute just cause for removal of an appointee. If you fail to answer all the questions, Council may not consider your application. 422 Brown St. Apt. 15, Iowa City, IA Human Rights Commission Application March 2008 Page 1 of 8 WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN MAKE TO THIS ADVISORY BOARD (OR STATE REASON FOR APPLYING? , ., a recent graduate of the International Studies program at the University of Iowa and an entering student at the UI College of Law, one of the most important contributions I can make to the Human Rights Commission is a student perspective on the issues that come before the Commission. My experiences working with human rights issues in Iowa City have been based both in the community and in the UI student body, which means I have a clear sense of how students interact with and experience human rights policies and procedures in the Iowa City community. For the Commission to fully represent the range of ideas and experiences in Iowa City, this perspective is critical. ,Furthermore, my human rights work to date in Iowa City includes a wide range of perspectives and contexts, giving me a broad 'and inclusive grasp on human rights policy and practice. I have consciously worked to connect my theoretical study of human rights as an undergraduate to my outreach programming at the UI Center for Human Rights, and in turn to my presidency of UI Amnesty International and my volunteer work for organizations including Miracles in Motion and the Sudanese Community Association. As a member of the Commission, I would therefore be capable of contributing a thorough, careful, and clear analysis of the issues it faces. Throughout the four years I have spent in Iowa City, I have demonstrated my commitment to realizing human rights and worked to develop a perspective on human rights with which I could contribute to my community. This perspective, my experiences, and commitment to continuing my work on human rights as I begin law school, all mean that I am prepared to make dedicated service on the Human Rights Commission part of my contribution to my community. First and foremost, I graduated with honors in International Studies with a concentration in Human Rights. Beginning my freshman year, I interned at the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights, where I solicited donations, organized events, conducted training sessions, and learned how to translate the concept of human rights to a local level. I also acted as the student liaison for One Community, One Book to increase student readership and participation. More recently, I became involved in Know Your Rights, an educational campaign to help immigrant communities understand their rights and responsibilities under U.S. law. Furthermore, I have worked or studied on five continents, which has allowed me to gain insight on how to effectively communicate and collaborate with people whose experiences or opinions are different from my own. Human Rights Commission Application January 2010 Page 1 of 8 WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN MAKE TO THIS ADVISORY BOARD (OR STATE REASON FOR APPLYING)? was not until I came to the University of Iowa that I truly understood- or cared- what human rights are. I will always be grateful that the University of Iowa allowed me to find and pursue my passion, which I intend to further study during my career as a law student. As I remain part of the University of Iowa community through the law school over the next three years, I am also looking forward to become a more active member of the community in Iowa City. Iowa City has been a nurturing and inspiring environment for me to learn and live, and 1 am eager to seize this opportunity to not be engaged in the community of Iowa City as well. I feel that I can apply my knowledge, enthusiasm, and diligence to make valuable contributions to a place I've been grateful to live for the past several years. Aside from the ways that 1 may be able to help, I also see this is a great learning experience, from which I can better understand human rights at a local level, as well as some of the issues specific to Iowa City. cei t ..,- J ~ wl:..,.
