HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010-08-17 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION 'iits-~ ~-~u ~' 2a Whereas, there is an increasing concern with overweight children in our state and community, and Whereas, some of the source of this alarming trend is a tendency of our youth to be less physically active in favor of more sedentary pursuits, and Whereas, children may benefit from a program of physical activity and their parents with suggestions for continued activity for them, and Whereas, Healthy Kids Initiative is raising awareness of physical activity by sponsoring a SK walk and run, youth mile, and other races and activities at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 29 at the West High School Track; and Whereas, Healthy Kids Community Care, our system of school-based health care, and its sponsors will help to meet the endowment match from the Community Foundation of Johnson County which provides support for the clinics' budget. NOW, therefore, be it resolved that I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim, Sunday, August 29, 2010 as: Get Moving for Healthy Kids Day in Iowa City, and encourage our community's children and their parents to participate in the event at West High School. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION 2b Whereas, on August 14, 1935, President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law to provide retirement insurance for American workers and families; and Whereas, over the past 75 years, Social Security has added survivor's insurance, disability insurance, Medicare enrollment, Supplemental Security income and "Extra Help" with paying for prescription drugs to its family protection program for the American people; and Whereas, Social Security pays benefits to about 55.8 million people nationwide; and to about 10,900 beneficiaries in the Clinton service area, totaling more than $11.5 million in monthly benefits; and Whereas, Social Security offers a wide variety of ways for members of the public to use their services: more than 1,250 local field offices; one of the world's largest 800 number networks at 1-800-772-1213; and afeature-rich, comprehensive Web site, www.socialsecurity.gov; and Whereas, many Social Security services are available online, including applying for Social Security retirement, disability, and Medicare benefits. You can also change your address, telephone number, direct deposit, request a new Medicare card or benefit verification online -all in the privacy of your home or office and on your time schedule; and Whereas, using Social Security's online services helps the environment by using less energy, less paper, less time and creating less waste; Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor, do hereby proclaim August 14, 2010 as "Social Security - Go Green, Go Online, Going Strong at 75" Day and encourage the Iowa City community to "Go Green, Go Online"; and to congratulate the manager and staff at the Iowa City Social Security District Office for their superior public service to the citizens of Iowa City and the surrounding communities.
